NASA has awarded SpaceX an additional $946 million for three crewed missions to the International Space Station. The contract modification covers future rotational flights and extends the planned period of service through 2030.
The new award brings the number of operational astronaut missions contracted from SpaceX to 17 and increases the overall commercial crew agreement to $5.92 billion. SpaceX is responsible for launch preparation, astronaut training, mission operations, spacecraft support while docked, return to Earth, and capsule recovery.
A central role in American human spaceflight
Crew Dragon began operational NASA service after the agency certified the system in 2020. Since then, the spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket have become the primary American transportation system for rotating crews to and from the space station.
While attached to the station, the capsule also serves as an emergency return vehicle. That requirement means reliability must be maintained not only during launch and landing but throughout the months that a crew remains in orbit.
NASA still wants more than one provider
The agency originally selected both SpaceX and Boeing to restore domestic crew-launch capability after the retirement of the space shuttle. Boeing’s Starliner program has experienced technical delays, increasing NASA’s near-term dependence on SpaceX for regular station access.
NASA continues to support a two-provider strategy because redundancy can protect the flight schedule if one spacecraft encounters a technical problem. The additional SpaceX missions give the agency more certainty while work on alternative transportation continues and while plans evolve for the station’s final years.
