Collection resumes after the holiday

New York City will not collect household trash, recycling or curbside compost on Monday, October 12, according to the Department of Sanitation. The suspension marks Italian Heritage Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Households whose regular collection falls on Monday should put their material outside Monday evening. Pickup begins Tuesday, October 13. The department cautions that the holiday backlog can delay collection, so the first day of resumed service is not a promise that every route will be cleared immediately.

Check the route before setting out material

The notice concerns the holiday collection change. Residents should use their normal service information for sorting and placement requirements, and contact 311 with questions. A building’s usual weekday schedule remains the starting point for deciding whether this adjustment applies.

The department also says sanitation personnel will take part in the Columbus Day parade and clean its route before and after the event. Those duties are separate from the suspended residential pickups.
